Drums, high hats, bass, snares plus hundreds of sounds and vocals put together the right way can make some really wicked hip hop beats. It’s all a matter of putting it all together the right way and creating a beat with a rhythm that sounds sick. Here is how you can make hip hop beats professionally or just for fun.

Ok so for this tutorial you will need a PC or Mac with speakers and the beat making software DubTurbo. You may be able to use this tutorial for other beat making software but for now this is a tutorial for this program.

Assuming you already have the software installed, please open up the program and follow these instructions to make a hip hop beat you can show off to your friends. Once the program is up and running grab the pencil tool and draw in 2 bars.

To do this click pencil tool, then click and hold the first bar and drag your mouse across to the other side creating 2 bars. For this beat you want to make sure the fixed tempo (found top right of DubTurbo screen) is set to 104.0.

Now grab your arrow cursor which is found next to the pencil tool and click on the 2 bars you created. Once the 2 bars are highlighted click on edit. A new screen will appear in the DubTurbo interface with lots of squares and an option to choose your patch. In the patched section scroll down and select the Hip Hop1 beat.

Now select the pencil tool so you can draw in beats.

For this hip hop beat click the very first box in the left hand side of the grid which is called Kick1.

Miss a line of squares and then click on the HiHat1 square.

Next line click on the Kick1 square.

After that line you will need to add two squares one in the snare box and one in theClap box.

Miss a line again and then add a Kick2 and a HiHat1.

Now miss two lines and then add a Kick2.

Line after that add a Kick1 and a HiHat1

Miss a line and then add a snare.

Miss another line and add a HiHat1

Next lin add a HiHat1 and a Kick2.

For the remaining bars copy all that again.

Now when you hit the play button you will hear a simple yet very cool sounding hip hop beat where you can loop and maybe add some vocals to.

For fun you could try other patches(sounds) or add some more beats to make it sound even better. With music making software and beat making software these days the sky is the limit to what kind of music you can make. Who knows you could be the next rapper on the block selling your own tracks.
