With his awesome life and achievements, Nigeria international actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje is simply an example of how much you can achieve against the odds, when you put your mind to it. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje was born in London to two Nigerian immigrant parents, and through hard work and sheer determination, has risen to become Africa’s top representative in Hollywood’s hard-action category. A former model, Triple A – as he is popularly called, is fluent in several languages, including English, Italian, Yoruba and Swahili.
Though he’s spent most of his life in the UK and USA, Agbaje tends to play a lot of roles depicting strong African men, of origins close to home.
This typical side of Agbaje is clear to see in Ace Ventura – when nature calls, where he plays Hitu, The Mummy Returns where he plays Egyptian henchman Lok Nah, The Bourne identity, where he features as African dictator Nykwana Wombosi, Kwesi in 2005’s Mistress of Spices, the ruthless Mr. Eko in Lost, and the absolutely ruthless Simon Adebisi in Oz.
The other side of Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje is the one you’ll see in often heavily English accented, urban and high-tech action roles, like his role of Magestic in Get Rich or Die Tryin’ with 50 cent and of course, his famous Heavy Duty role in 2009’s G. I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra. Thus far, he has shared in the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Outstanding Performance award for Lost, and been nominated for the Black Reel, Saturn, and Image awards.
Born August, 1967, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje attended King’s College, University of London, where he funded his way through college with modeling work. He graduated with a master’s degree in law, and in 1992 was featured in several music videos, including “Giving Him Something He Can Feel” by EnVogue and “Love No Limit” by Mary J. Blige. In 1994, he moved on from his fashion-model life in Milan, Italy, to Los Angeles, and subsequently made his movie debut in the movie “Congo” in 1995.
This year, the buzz on Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje is all about his anticipated show-stopper, “The Killer Elite”, with an all-round bad-guy cast of Robert de Niro, Jason Statham, Clive Owen and more. There’s also talk of expected hard-core action with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in “Faster”. Faster is due for release in November 2010, while The Killer Elite will be out in 2011.
Next year, Agbaje will feature in the remake of all-time horror classic “The Thing”, and in 2012, watchout for him in the upcoming animated flick “Pirates!”.
It’s easy to see that this hard-working Nigerian Hollywood star has started on a highly visible trend of great achievement, that we wish would inspire more of his countrymen, and indeed the Nigeria movies industry to strive for excellence, despite the odds.
